However, if you can't get into the Auckland CBD to physically view the portraits then visit them online.

Hokianga chief Tamati Waka Nene is one of the portraits exhibited online, there are also other treasures such as photographs of the tupuna, manuscripts and information provided by descendants and other institutions providing a more holistic approach to the subject, the tupuna.

The Auckland Art Gallery has set a benchmark of quality and excellence for other heritage storehouses to follow, regarding the respect and care institutions give to taonga Maori physically and in the digital realm. Miharo pai, Auckland Art Gallery, miharo pai!

The return of Matariki

Te Tai Tokerau Matariki Events Calendar

Matariki Festival
What is Matariki?

Last week I attended the inaugural Matariki celebrations of Te Kura Taumata o Panguru Area School; at Ngati Manawa marae, Hokianga. Each company had its own nickname, reflecting the history and character of its main recruiting area:

A Company, drawn from Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua and other northern iwi, was known as the Gum Diggers (Ngā Kiri Kapia) due to the long history of kauri gum digging in the north.

Harding Leaf's name is synonymous with the 'fighting Ngapuhi'. He enlisted for W.W.I in 1914 and served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front. He became a legend for his inspired leadership at Chunuk Bair with his rallying battle cry "Fight like the Ururoa, fight to the death".

Harding gave 4 years 51 days in overseas service in W.W.I. In W.W.II Harding gave his life. He was killed in action in Crete. He has no grave, no official resting place but his memory lives on in the heart of his people.

Lieutenant Colonel H.G. When the war broke out his life had already been packed with adventure and he had even then become a legend among his people. The Ngapuhi of the North were the wild men of the Battalion, and Harding was of them. He lived and loved at Hokianga in the old stamping ground of Hongi Hika and of Judge Manning, and in his own way he followed the path they had trod.

Rare Book: The Sons of Ramaroa by Joan M Leaf

The stories of New Zealand soldiers from the South Hokianga area.

Hokianga Exhibition Online Revisited

Will Kupe return to the Hokianga once again

NZ Herald article on Rawene

Ngapuhi Festival 2010

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? When a mysterious young man named Tai (Isaac Barber) wanders into town, the twins are quick to befriend him. When Melody takes Tai to visit the local junkyard, they encounter the vicious dog that belongs to the twin’s older brother, Gene. To protect themselves, Tai and Melody seek refuge in an old freezer, but they soon realise they are locked in. Melody, with her debilitating asthma, dies from the lack of oxygen in the freezer and Tai is blamed for her death. The film then explores the ways in which her death affects Tai, Melody’s family and Kimi, who doesn’t initially accept that his twin sister is gone forever.

In the film, New Zealand's picturesque landscape is employed for reasons aside from the typical visual spectacle. “We wanted to use the landscape almost like another character in the film, another presence,” says Ballantyne. “The landscape is a very big part of New Zealand culture. You can’t go half an hour and not hit the coast, we’re very connected to the landscape. And for Maori a lot of mythology is connected to the landscape.”

Our Hokianga - Hokianga Historic Society

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Thank you.

The artworks will be returning to:
Rāwene Town Hall
26 October 2007
4 pm – 7 pm

If there are any difficulties concerning the collection of your artwork, please contact:
Māori Services team (Te Rōpū Ratonga Māori), by landline, (09) 367-6939 or email libtrrm@gmail.com

Hokianga Exhibition closing.

29th of September saw the closing of the Hokianga exhibition, held here at Auckland City Libraries..
It was an emotional and heartfelt occasion for all the people there. It was quite a discussion!
In the end we came up with a list of 10 people. The actual organisation of the lecture series booking of the speakers, publicity and timing was put together by Judith Waaka.

We were lucky that almost everyone we asked was willing even with our very tight budget. The support from the speakers and visitors for the Kaupapa has been overwhelming, with the lectures very well attended so far.
We have been proud to be able to present these speakers and allow people to hear their Korero. I myself have learnt so much on so many subjects!

If you have not visited a lecture yet you still can, we have Rewi Spraggon and Riki Bennett from Te Ara Toi performing a traditional musical experience on the 19th of September

We would like to take this opportunity to express our enormous thanks to the speakers who have taken part in the Marmon arrived in Hokianga sometime in the early 1820’s and upon landing was adopted by the chief Muriwai, quickly becoming a very valuable middle man helping to negotiate between the Settlers and Maori.Between 1881 – 1882 Marmon's story ran in the Auckland Weekly News (and later the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Star) in an exciting series running over a month. The actual papers in which Marmon tells his story can be viewed at Auckland City Libraries. It is a fascinating tale, giving a fresh view of how Hokianga looked in a much simpler time, with fantastic stories of the people and places he experienced first hand. The full truth of Marmon and his story may never be told. What we do have is a rousing blend of fact and fiction, one thing that is beyond doubt is that he integrated fully with Maori, he himself is quoted as saying “That is the last time I put faith in my own race – the Pakehas, henceforth I am Maori in thought, word and deed since among the savages I have found more true faithfulness man to man then in the boasted European; there is no honour in them”. Jackie Marmon died in 1880 after living as a recluse for years, but lives on in his decendants, and the story he has left behind.

Events Programme goes live!

An exciting <a href="http://www.aucklandlibrary.co.nz/maori/hui/programme.htm"target="_blank">events programme will run throughout the exhibition, starting on July 14 with live music from Ruia Aperahama through to a lunchtime speakers series, an evening performance by Te Aratoi and an evening with Lindsay Charman-Love and Kate de Courcy.

We are proud to boast speakers from all over Aotearoa, who have donated their time to share their experiences of the Hokianga with us, with wide ranging kaupapa such as: Te Whare Tapu o Ngā Puhi, Education, Tā moko, Tamati Waka Nene, Digital memory and much more. Choosing taonga for the exhibition was hard, but a necessary task. The selection criteria was based on te ihi, te wehi, te mana me te tapu o nga taonga. The feeling ( prickles up the spine), the sense (the stories the pieces told, to touch and even the smell), the look and the emotions they evoked. It was a hard process, in the end we choose 135 items!

We'd like to thank everyone involved to Wally, Lindsay and Claire White for organising everything up at Rawene(the hiring of the hall, distribution of posters and the word-of-mouth media) and to all artisans who submitted taonga-your treasures. For a few of us it was a first time experience; and for others it was their turangawaewae, their home. Our home base in the Hokianga was in Waihou, and Waimirirangi marae was our sanctuary and we were made to feel very welcomed and comfortable by the home people there. Highlights on our trip were many, we met a lot of people and we got to see and film, someone receiving a Ta Moko, traditional Maori tattoo. We also visited many ancient sites, and learnt the lore of the land.
After witnessing the sunset and the moonrise on top of Arai te uru, on the southern side of the harbour; we took the long way home through Waipoua forest and returned to the harshness of the city lights. We came back with a great deal more knowledge, understanding and a deeper respect for Hokianga. And for all of us it was a realisation of the responsibility on our shoulders to ensure the integrity of the exhibition is of a very high standard.
The picture above is one of the many we've taken from the mouth of the Hokianga harbour looking over to Panguru on the northside.

In the spotlight:our theme

On our first visit to the Hokianga in November 2006, we circulated pamphlets promoting the exhibition.
